Camarada merges the classical with the contemporary in La Jolla’s Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center.

San Diego, CA (March 4, 2024) — Following their sold-out performance of Tango Buenos Aires, Camarada returns to the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center for Vivaldi’s Magic, a program of Baroque-era masterpieces infused with vibrant rock energy. The evening will feature Artistic Director Beth Ross Buckley on flute; a string quartet made up of violinists David Buckley and Angela Xing, violist Travis Maril, and cellist Abe Liebhaber; Composer-in-Residence Andrés Martín on double bass; Associate Artist Director Dana Burnett on piano and harpsichord; and Fred Benedetti on classical guitar. Robert John Hughes will provide narration throughout the program.

Vivaldi’s Magic will take audiences on a journey back in time, touching down first in 1728 with Antonio Vivaldi’s La Notte (The Nightmare). This flute concerto, renowned amongst Vivaldi’s works for its virtuosic nature, will be reinvented with a modern twist in the hands of arranger Andrés Martín. The concerto will be complimented by the mezmerizing melodies of 17th- and 18th-century French composer and harpsichordist, François Couperin.

Throughout their concert season, Camarada excels at elevating the works of living composers, and Vivaldi’s Magic is no exception. Alongside Baroque-era gems, the evening will also feature Mexican composer José Enrique González-Medina’s Concierto barroco, a neo-Baroque fusion of 17th-century elegance and the pulse of contemporary rhythms, inspired by González-Medina’s upbringing in Tijuana. Finally, Camarada will return to the heart of the Baroque era with J.C. Bach’s Quartet for violin, viola, cello, & piano.
