Dear Beth,
I am grateful for the support from you. The flute version of Memory has a performance by Mary Holzhausen who helped to do the arrangement. The first phrase is an imitation of the speaking tune in shouting out Teacher Lin in my native tongue Cantonese. The great violin educator Prof. Lin Yaoji is one of my violin teachers and mentors. He was also a Cantonese. My Memory was composed when I heard the sad news of his death. There are variation forms of the first pitch material in all registers of the solo instrument. The deep sadness, the dramatic emotion, and the strong passion have been expressed in the piece.

Thanks again for programming the wonderful Memories concert. Gratefully yours, Chen Yi
