SANCTUARY SUITE:  This concert features the soundscape explorations of world music-inspired jazz composed by jazz legend Peter Sprague! His Sanctuary Suite, commissioned by Glen & Cornelia Feye and Kurt & Jennifer Eve, is grounded in the rich and diverse music of refugees who have found their haven in America.

“The Sanctuary Suite has 3 movements and the first is called Safe Place. It tells the story of escaping danger and making one’s way to a haven of safety. Angular lines and broken up rhythms are the musical elements used to convey this feeling.

African Spirit Waltz is about a lazy afternoon and a cloudless sky, carefree and fully appreciating the freedom of living. It’s an old song, uncomplicated and unfettered.

Empowered is the feeling I get once a strong foundation of living is established. This song takes that strength out to the world and shares the wisdom found. Big swaths of sound, complex melodies, lots of energy and after the journey returning to a quiet place.” ~ Peter Sprague
